Galatea is a masterful reproduction of the celebrated marble statue sculpted by the Italian artist Lorenzo Bartolini’s successor Leopoldo Ansiglioni in 1882. Rooted in one of antiquity’s most enduring myths — narrated in Ovidio’s ‘Metamorphosis’ — Ansiglioni’s work stands as a sublime expression of late 19th-century neoclassical sculpture, capturing both the idealized beauty and emotional resonance that defined the era. The original statue is today preserved as a treasured work within the collection of the University of Greenwich in London.
Commissioned by a private client and completed in January 2026, this reproduction was carved in Bianco P Marble — a material of exceptional purity and refinement whose soft luminosity and consistent grain bring extraordinary life to the figure’s flowing contours and delicate surface detail. Every element was finished entirely by hand, demanding the kind of patient, skilled craftsmanship that remains the hallmark of true fine art stone carving.
The work honors not only Ansiglioni’s original vision but the deeper mythology it embodies — the idea that marble itself, in the hands of a devoted artist, can be transformed into something that transcends stone entirely. This piece carries that same spirit forward, bridging over a century of artistic tradition into a contemporary private setting with grace and fidelity.
