Giulio Monteverde. 1882. A masterpiece of neoclassical religious sculpture, the pensive figure of the angel stands watch over the tomb of the Oneto family in the Genoese cemetery of Staglieno. Crowded with monumental statuary, the famous burial ground occupies a hillside above the city, and Monteverde’s btooding angel is one of the sculptures that visitors throng to see. Finished pieces have much richer detailing on the wings than is visible on the cast.
