Bacchus

Jacopo Sansovino. 1515. Celebrated by contemporaries, Sansovino’s Bacchus exemplifies the Renaissance project of recovering the forms of classical antiquity. Commissioned for the Florentine garden of Giacomo Bartolini. Later bought by Cosimo I Medici for the Palazzo Vecchio, where it joined works by Michelangelo and Cellini. Now in the Bargello.

19th century cast acquired from studio of Cesare Viviani. Viviani made weekly trips to Florence to scour the dealers for the best casts, and the tradition in Pietrasanta is that his casts were of exceptional quality.
